Jesse Lingard’s potential loan move to Newcastle United is in jeopardy as Manchester United demand huge survival bonuses, according to reports.

The struggling Magpies have already spent around £37m this month thanks to their new owners, who are backed by the spending power of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Kieran Trippier has arrived from Atletico Madrid and striker Chris Wood joined from fellow relegation fighters Burnley, but Eddie Howe’s side are still looking to do January transfer business.

Lingard is among those in Newcastle’s crosshairs, with the St James’ Park club making an approach about a loan deal for the England international.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a successful stint on loan at West Ham in the second half of last season but the Man Utd academy graduate Lingard hasn’t made a Premier League start this term and is out of contract in the summer.

Newcastle have apparently made an approach in an effort to bring Lingard to St James’ Park on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein brought us news earlier that a deal was ‘on the verge of collapsing’ over the finances involved in the deal, with Ornstein pointing to a sizeable loan fee as the issue.

However, James Ducker in the Daily Telegraph insists that Newcastle were ‘prepared to cover all of Lingard’s £75,000 a week wages and pay a considerable loan fee’.

Instead, Ducker suggests it was the ‘substantial bonuses should Newcastle avoid relegation’ that have put the Magpies off as they ‘balked at the overall cost of the deal’.

Ducker had reported late last night that Lingard was ‘‘increasingly angered and exasperated’ at his situation at Old Trafford but that story was later deleted.

The fresh report has been downgraded to Lingard being ‘frustrated by his current situation’ at Man Utd with time ticking towards the transfer deadline.

A report from talkSPORT last night said a deal was not ‘totally off the table yet’ and former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell thinks it would be a “huge signing” for Newcastle if they could get it over the line.

Campbell told Football Insider: “It’d be a huge signing and the latest suggests it’s still possible.

“A player that ripped it up at West Ham last season. He is a player who can create, can score and can be a match-winner as well. He has played at the top level.

“With the World Cup coming up, he will be desperate to go out there and play. At Newcastle he would have the opportunity so showcase his skills.

“If they can get this done, it will. be a real plus. I think he would be a really good signing if they can get him for a reasonable loan fee.”
