Liverpool have reportedly bid £28.5million on Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini to replace the departed Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Reds are aiming to challenge for the Premier League title next season, and replacing Wijnaldum will be a priority this summer in order to contribute towards doing so.

Pellegrini only has one year left on his Roma contract and is currently with the Italian national team preparing for the upcoming European Championships.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport say the Reds have already lodged a bid for the midfielder as Jurgen Klopp looks to swiftly re-stock the midfield.

The Italian has 17 caps for his country and scored 11 times for Roma in the 2020/21 season.

Roma are yet to open up contract negotiations for the 24-year-old, so he could be available for a decent price.

The Reds have been linked with the playmaker for a while now, with The Mirror putting them as favourites to get Pellegrini’s signature.

Wijnaldum looked set to join Barcelona on a free transfer before PSG swooped in and simply offered the Holland international more money.

They also benefitted from a personal hunt by Mauricio Pochettino, who spoke with the 30-year-old twice to convince him on a switch to the Parc des Princes.

The central midfielder will now help PSG in their hunt to win back the Ligue 1 title.

Their run of three consecutive league triumphs was ended by underdogs Lille in the season just finished.

It’s also hoped Wijnaldum’s experience can help to bring Champions League glory to the French capital.

They reached the final in 2020 but were defeated by German titans Bayern Munich.

Pochettino took them to the semi-final this time around, although their tempers unravelled during the loss to Manchester City.

Wijnaldum, who won Europe’s biggest prize with Liverpool in 2019, will provide the PSG squad with even more quality.

When revealing his decision to leave Anfield back in March, 30-year-old said: “I’m fighting against tears right now. The people in Liverpool have shown me love during the five years. I will miss them, you know?

“I hope to have played many more years for the club but unfortunately things went different. I have to start a new adventure.

“I knew I went to a big club. I remember that I was sitting in the living room and the manager said when I come to Liverpool we would win prizes. I am happy it went that well. It would have been really painful to leave the club without any.”
