Ex-Liverpool keeper recalls main reason for 2014 PL title failure

Steven Gerrard slip Liverpool

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones thinks the club let “emotions” play “too big a role” in their Premier League title chase in 2014.

Luis Suarez scored 31 goals as Liverpool looked like winning the Premier League title in 2013/14, before a defeat at home to Chelsea and a 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace turned the title race on its head, as Manchester City won the division by two points.

Following Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea, many onlookers blamed emotion for getting the better of Brendan Rodgers’ side and Jones agrees that it played a huge part.

“I learned a lot from that time,” Jones told Soccer News (via Sport Witness).

“Especially that as a footballer, you should always be balanced in terms of mentality, not get too tense.

“That was the problem at the time at Liverpool; the emotions started to play too big a role.”
