Liverpool chief rubbishes talk of £1.5bn takeover bid

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has denied that Liverpool are in negotiations over a £1.5billion takeover.

Reds chiefs were reported to have held talks with a consortium in the Middle East led by Dubai financier Amanda Staveley.

It had previously been suggested that Staveley was negotiating a takeover of Newcastle, but it is now believed that Liverpool were the subject of interest.

Abu Dhabi-based publication ‘The National’ reported earlier this week that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group had been offered £1.2bn for the club, potentially rising to £1.5bn depending on Champions League performances.

But FSG believed that the club were being ‘undervalued’, and so rejected the bid.

Yet Werner has denied that any such negotiations have even taken place.

“We have better things to do than batting down rumours about negotiations with Ms Staveley,” Werner told the ECHO.

“However, there’s no truth to them.”
