Liverpool defensive target ‘would like to’ leave current club as he details Prem transfer chance

Micky van de Ven, Netherlands, June 2023

Liverpool target Micky van de Ven has stated that while he doesn’t mind staying at Wolfsburg for another year, he “would like to leave” if given the chance.

Van de Ven has played just one full season of top-flight football. Indeed, he left FC Volendam in the second division in the Netherlands for Wolfsburg in 2021.

He was eased in during his first season in the Bundesliga, playing five times – three of those appearances came in a row, in the final three games of the season.

This term, the 22-year-old has been a firm fixture of the Wolfsburg side, playing 33 times, in which he scored once and provided two assists, alongside some solid defensive performances.

His form has clearly not gone unnoticed, with Liverpool registering an interest in him. That interest seems to have largely been driven by Jorg Schmadtke, the Reds’ new transfer chief, who recently left Wolfsburg to take up the post at Anfield.

Van de Ven is seemingly aware of that interest, and has spoken on his desire to leave his current club if given the chance.

“I am very good at Wolfsburg, so I don’t mind staying at Wolfsburg for another year. But if I get the chance to leave, I would like to,” he told ESPN.

“Of course, I read everything. I have good contact with my agent, so I know what’s going on. I’ll see where it will lead.”

He also touched on the potential of a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool seemingly the leading contender in England to snare him.

“Hopefully, [a transfer] would be nice,” he said.

“The Premier League? Maybe, yes. Who knows?”

While it won’t be as simple as the player wanting to move so the transfer being an easy one, it will certainly be encouraging for Liverpool, or any other side that was interested in snaring Van de Ven, to know he’s open to a move.

That he’s only 22 and is already having a good impact on a top-flight side shows there’s room for him to progress. As such, moving now could give him, and whatever side he was to go to, a chance of forming a good relationship, allowing him to thrive.
