Liverpool have ‘strong’ interest in midfielder – Club ‘urgently’ need funds
Borussia Monchengladbach “urgently” need to generate funds for new players so a January exit for Liverpool target Denis Zakaria is on the cards, according to reports.
The Switzerland international has been heavily linked with Liverpool in recent months. It was stated last week that the English side are in “pole position” to sign him.
The 25-year-old has featured 138 times for Monchengladbach since the start of the 2017/18 season. He previously played for Servette and Young Boys.
Zakaria’s contract expires at the end of this current season and he is expected to leave.
Calciomercato (as cited by Sport Witness) are reporting that Liverpool have “strong” interest in the midfielder. Juventus and Roma are also tracking him.
German outlet Bild have added that Monchengladbach “urgently need to generate transfer revenues” before they can bring anyone in. Zakaria is on the list of players who could be used to raise funds.
Elsewhere, Mohamed Salah has been in great form this season. He has already reached 20 goals this term as he has established himself as one of the best players in world football.
Despite this, former Liverpool striker Michael Owen believes that Salah can still improve:
“He obviously went to Chelsea and didn’t really set the world alight and that’s why he had to go on to find a new pathway to find the level he’s at now.
“You look at the Messi’s and the [Cristiano] Ronaldo’s, you look at the [Erling] Haalands’s the Mbappe’s, they’re guys you immediately go they’re superstars, they’re going to be superstars.
“With him it wasn’t really that from the beginning but the way he’s grown and developed into this player who’s deciding games at will. 20 goals before December is an absolute joke, it’s out of order.
“We’ve seen him almost learning on the job. He was a poor finisher, an average finisher. Early in his career at Chelsea and he’s just got better and better and better.
“That for me is repetition. Still has the instinct side, which I think he could get better on actually.
“I don’t think he’s got great movement in terms of nicking across a defender at the near post and things like that. But, his hardcore finishing has just improved and that is down to repetition in my eyes.”
