Liverpool hero Aspas only learned one word of English

You may remember Iago Aspas from such six-second videos as ‘worst corner ever’ and ‘Is this the worst thing you’ve ever seen?’ but we now have further excellent information on a player one Football 365 Mailboxer famously described as looking like ‘a face drawn on a balloon’.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Aspas only learned one word of English during his entire spell in England.

Aspas was signed by Brendan Rodgers for a fee of £8m, and must surely be the worst signing of his reign – there have been a few. Aspas failed to score a single goal in his 14 matches, and is now back at Celta Vigo.

As part of Marca’s report into Spanish players living in England comes the following nugget, as relayed by the Daily Mirror:

“There are those who don’t even reach the A1 level [of English]. One of the most obvious cases of this is Iago Aspas, and the word ‘yes’… the only term he learned to pronounce fluently during his short stay with Liverpool.”

How very English of him.
