Liverpool boss Klopp reacts to £110m Caicedo agreement with medical mooted ahead of Chelsea
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists he “didn’t expect” the Reds to be in a position to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer.
Widespread reports revealed overnight that Liverpool have agreed a £110m fee for the Ecuador international with Chelsea struggling to agree a fee for the midfielder.
Chelsea had been negotiating for weeks for Caicedo but Brighton had knocked back their biggest offer of £80m recently and now Liverpool look to have swooped in to land the midfielder.
It had seemed like Liverpool were set on bringing Romeo Lavia to the club from Southampton but a deal for Caicedo has now taken top priority.
When asked about the deal for Caicedo, Klopp told reporters on Friday: “The fee with the club is agreed. We will see what that means. We aren’t a club with endless resources and we didn’t expect a couple of things to happen this summer. Then it happened.”
On whether Caicedo will have his medical today, Klopp added: “I cannot say. I don’t know.”

Liverpool face their competitors for Caicedo, Chelsea, in their first match of the season on Sunday and Klopp is looking forward to the opening weekend test.
Klopp continued: “We prepared the Chelsea game for a while. There is no distraction. I think it is two talented football teams, we watched Chelsea on their tour and there were a lot of good things. That’s what we have to prepare for. It’s their first game and they will want to show up.
“They have really good options offensively. It’s the first competitive game for us and we really want to go for it, but have to see how it goes. I think we should give it a proper try.”
Asked how he felt pre-season went, Klopp replied: “I enjoyed it a lot. The boys were open, listening and eyes and ears open. We did a lot not only on the pitch but meetings as well. We really wanted to learn our game. It must be different, we want to go to next level in our game together.”
On last season, when Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League after a difficult opening two thirds of the season, Klopp said: “There were moments in the games where we were more open and not protected. It is an organisation thing, not down to individual talent.”
