Liverpool make ‘crazy’ bid for ex-Chelsea star as La Liga club could be ‘forced’ to sell

Liverpool are hoping to bring former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen to Anfield from Barcelona this summer, according to reports.

The Reds are hoping to bring in a new centre-back, as well as a couple of midfielders, before the transfer deadline with Jurgen Klopp looking to get his side challenging at the top of the table again after a disappointing 2022/23 campaign.

Klopp can call on any of Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip in central defence but reports have indicated that the Liverpool boss is keen to bring in a young left-sided centre-back who he can develop.

Christensen doesn’t really fit the bill at the age of 27 but reports in Spain last week claimed Liverpool are set to bid for the Denmark international.

It is understood that a bid of €30m was ‘immediately rejected’ by Barcelona for their defender but that Liverpool are now planning to ‘try their luck again’.

The report added that a new offer for around €50m will be submitted ‘in the coming days’ and the Catalan giants could be tempted to ‘sacrifice’ Christensen this summer.

And now Spanish publication Fichajes claims that ‘crazy’ offer of €50m has now been offered as Klopp ‘continues to look for the best reinforcements’ for his Liverpool squad.

Klopp is ‘willing to throw the house out the window’ for Christensen this summer and Barcelona ‘cannot afford to rule out a transfer in the coming weeks as long as the appropriate offer appears’.

Christensen only arrived at the Nou Camp last summer with the Dane making 32 appearances in all competitions for Xavi’s side.

The report adds that Barcelona’s ‘delicate financial situation will force the Catalan club once again to consider parting with one of its best men’ but a €50m return on a free transfer would be considered good business by anyone.

Liverpool are hoping to pull off ‘one of the great bombings of the transfer market’ by signing Christensen.

The Reds beat Leicester City 4-0 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday night with goals from Darwin Nunez, Bobby Clark, Diogo Jota and Ben Doak sealing the win.

On his side’s performance, Klopp told the club’s official website: “Obviously we scored wonderful goals, that was good, created great other chances, that was good. First half, the high press didn’t work pretty well. In moments it got better and then we won the ball high up the pitch, which is so important.

“But that’s why we had these situations where Leicester could go through with the speed. It’s really difficult for the full-backs in these moments to be in the right position.

“We started these kind of things slightly in between – everybody knows that’s not new and not a problem, the thing is just the boys around the ball have to put real pressure on the ball.

“That’s what we didn’t do. Second half [was] much better. I think we realised that immediately, looked better. I said it’s really important for us to see that because we spend a lot of time on that.

“In possession, again, first half looked in moments a bit stiff. Curtis and Trent in these moments are both sensational footballers and can do that. When we then found Macca in between the lines then it was really good and when we sped the game up it looked really good.

“We need to be calm but in some moments we were a bit too calm and the passing was not hard enough and quick enough, and then, in the end, not good enough. But a lot of good moments, it’s just we can do better, so that’s pretty much what I’m talking about.

“So, I’m absolutely fine, the result is top, nobody is injured, just a few knocks. The atmosphere was top during the game but especially after the game. The lap we had afterwards, it’s really special, I have to say, and we now experience it a couple of times but it’s special. What the people are doing here, thank you for that. Yeah, a good day in the office. All good.”
