Joe Gomez spoke of his relief after returning to competitive action for Liverpool Under-23s on Wednesday evening.

Gomez played the full 90 minutes as a young Reds side eased to a 4-0 victory over Burnley which secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup.

He assisted the third goal, with Matty Virtue scoring a hat-trick and Spaniard Madger Gomes adding the fourth.

It marked the former Charlton defender’s first appearance since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury last October, just days after Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager.

As a result, the 19-year-old has never featured under the German, but he hopes to be available for first-team selection in the new year.

“It’s my dream just to play for the club again,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.

“I haven’t had the experience of playing under this new manager and it’s something I really want to do – just to play at Anfield again.

“I know I have got to be patient but I am eager, obviously, after a long year out to get back out there.”
