Liverpool: ‘Next’ Bellingham in ‘attractive situation’ emerges as midfield ‘alternative’ for Klopp
Liverpool have been told that they should ‘turn their attention towards’ AC Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana if they fail to sign Jude Bellingham.
It has been widely reported in recent months that Bellingham is Liverpool’s preferred midfield target ahead of this summer.
The 19-year-old is among the best young players in the world and this was never going to be an easy transfer to complete amid competition from Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Bellingham is under contract until 2025 and it has been reported that he is valued at around £130m. The Bundesliga club’s financial demands have decreased Liverpool’s chances of signing the midfielder this summer.
Liverpool may have to look elsewhere this summer with them arguably needing at least two new midfielders ahead of next season. Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Wolves’ Matheus Nunes are among the players they are being linked with.
But Caught Offside French football expert – Jonathan Johnson – thinks Liverpool should ‘turn their attention towards Monaco’s Fofana’ as an ‘alternative’.
The 24-year-old has played over 130 times for the Ligue 1 side across all competitions. Johnson thinks Fofana is ‘one of Monaco’s highly-rated midfielders’. The journalist has also explained that the player has an ‘attractive contract situation’.
‘Even though a lot of fans have their hopes pinned on Liverpool signing Bellingham, all hope of the club making a good signing is not lost and that is because the next player that I can see a number of European giants turning their attention towards is Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana,’ Johnson told Caught Offside.
‘Fofana is still only 24 years old and is already one of Monaco’s most highly-rated midfielders. He also has an attractive contract situation which is set to expire next summer or the following year if Monaco decides to trigger his one-year extension clause.’
Liverpool supporters will no doubt be gutted if they miss out on Bellingham, who is attracting serious interest from Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants recently beat Liverpool to sign Aurelien Tchouameni. Johnson has also explained how his move to Madrid was completed under the noses of the Premier League club.
‘As for Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and why Liverpool were unable to sign him last summer, the Frenchman’s replacement was ready and waiting at Monaco which enabled the principality club to move him on for a big sum and that is exactly what they did,’ Johnson added.
‘Tchoameni was wanted by a number of top teams when he was leaving Monaco and Kylian Mbappe was very keen that PSG tried to sign him as he rejected Real Madrid to extend in Paris. However, once Real Madrid came in for Tchouameni, he only had eyes for them and there was only ever going to be one outcome once the fee was agreed.’
