Liverpool plans for January

According to reports, Liverpool could let a couple of players leave this month and it is also possible that they bring in a midfielder on loan.

If reports are to be believed, Liverpool are set to be busy over the next week before the January transfer window closes.

They have already signed Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven for a significant fee but they arguably need to do more business before the end of this month.

This comes amid the club’s poor form in the league. They sit ninth in the Premier League and it is now looking likely that they will miss out on the top four.

Liverpool have been impacted by injuries this term but they still would have hoped to perform significantly better and they seemingly already have one eye on next season.

The Daily Mail have provided details on Liverpool’s plans for the rest of this month. Nat Phillips is one player who could leave as the Reds are ‘in negotiations to sell’ the defender.

The centre-back featured prominently for Liverpool during the 2020/21 season as he covered for Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. But he had a spell on loan at AFC Bournemouth last term and he is now down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

The report adds that Liverpool ‘may sign a midfielder on loan to bolster their squad as they look to climb back up into the European places’.

They did just that in the summer as ex-Arsenal target Arthur Melo was brought in on loan from Juventus. The Brazilian has been unable to make an impact for Liverpool though as he has missed much of this season through injury.

The report states: ‘Klopp’s side are assessing the squads of top European sides like Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Juventus to see if there are any temporary deals they can do to add to their numbers in midfield.’

It is indicated that Liverpool are only interested in a loan deal for a midfielder this month as they intend to ‘wait until the summer to pursue moves for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Wolves’ Matheus Nunes’.

It is being widely reported that Bellingham and Nunes are Liverpool’s main targets ahead of the summer. Bellingham is one of the best young players in the world and they are keen to build their squad around the 19-year-old.

It is known that Bellingham is not driven by money and Liverpool are said to be in a strong position to sign Bellingham in the coming months.

As for Nunes, he was a target for Liverpool last year before he ultimately joined Premier League rivals Wolves. But he remains on Liverpool’s radar and could cost around £44m this summer.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner are all out of contract in the summer. It has been reported that Oxlade-Chamberlain is being ‘targeted’ by Brighton.
