Liverpool are reportedly in ‘pole position’ to sign Hirving Lozano from Napoli with it looking like he could leave before his contract expires in 2024.
The Premier League side have already been linked with one Napoli player on Boxing Day, with Jurgen Klopp reportedly an admirer of Eljif Elmas.
Liverpool could do worse than target Napoli players as they have been superb this season. They are top of Serie A and they are emerging as a dark horse to win the Champions League.
If reports are to be believed they could lose Lozano in January, though.
Man Utd were linked with Lozano in the summer. Fabrizio Romano revealed back in October that he was “offered” to the Premier League side.
“Hirving Lozano has been linked with Manchester United recently, but it’s important to clarify that it is the player’s former agent who has given quotes to the press about a potential move to Old Trafford,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.
“From what I’m told, he was offered to Manchester United, nothing else. They never made any bid to Napoli.
“The situation is really quiet, he’s happy at Napoli now; I think his price tag could be around €20-25m.”
Lozano has been in and out of the Napoli team this season but he was in great form before the World Cup.
He was involved in five goals in seven Serie A games to move onto seven goal involvements for Napoli in 19 outings.
Man Utd have not been mentioned as a potential destination as much over the past month or so as they are instead focused on signing Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in January.
Italian outlet Calciomercato claim that Liverpool are now the team in ‘pole position’ to sign Lozano.
It is said that Premier League sides have been watching him ‘for some time’ with the view to signing him before his contract expires in 2024.
This is all that is said about Liverpool and the outlet does not have the best track record when it comes to reliability, so perhaps take this with a pinch of salt.
Liverpool may not sign Lozano in January but Klopp certainly wants them to bring someone in.
They signed Luis Diaz last January and Klopp has hinted that they would like to do something “very positive” like that next month as well.
“Last season we had Luis Diaz come in, which was very helpful for that part of the season, everybody would see that the same way,” Klopp said.
“But doing something again that is very positive – why not?”
Earlier this week when asked about Liverpool potentially bringing in Jude Bellingham in January, Klopp answered: “I am the wrong person to ask, I don’t know.
“January in our situation is a window where we are always prepared, that’s how it is.
“It’s clear what ideas we have and how the necessity is from our point of view. All the rest doesn’t lie 100% in our hands. We always work with what we have got and that will not change.”
