Liverpool ‘prepare £88m package’ for Newcastle star as Klopp identifies unlikely summer priority

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to offer £88m for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer, who has been excellent under Eddie Howe.

It’s no secret that Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his midfield, with several high-profile targets currently on the manager’s radar.

While a successful bid for Guimaraes seems highly unlikely, this has not deterred Liverpool from making an ambitious approach.

The Reds seem to have finally rediscovered some much-needed form, although, it looks unlikely to secure them a top-four finish.

Klopp’s team currently find themselves fifth in the Premier League table after winning their last four games and are seven points behind Manchester United, in fourth.

Indeed, they will have to hope that the Red Devils drop points in more than one game to have any hope of playing Champions League football next season.

Regardless, it is believed that Klopp is already planning ahead for next season, with the manager looking to bring in more than one quality midfielder.

Jude Bellingham has long been considered to be Liverpool’s primary target. However, with Real Madrid now ‘close’ to finalising terms with the Borussia Dortmund superstar, that ship has sailed.

Michael Owen recently urged the Reds to sign West Ham captain Declan Rice, while other players such as Ryan Gravenberch and Lovro Mejer have also been linked.

Now, though, according reports coming out of Spain, Klopp has made Guimaraes his ‘top summer target’ and is willing to pay €100m (approx. £88.2m) secure his services.

However, any potential move could prove difficult, given how valuable the 25-year-old is to Newcastle.

The £40m signing of Guimaraes from Lyon in January 2022 is arguably the best bit of business the Tynesiders have done in decades.

He has played a major role in Newcastle’s recent success, and has quickly become a fan favourite among the St. James’ Park faithful.

Overall, he has made 52 appearances under Howe so far, scoring nine goals and making six assists.

Given his performances, it’s unsurprising to see clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain chasing his signature.

However, Newcastle are believed to be preparing a new contract for Guimaraes, which would keep him at St. James’ Park for the foreseeable future.

The midfielder’s current deal is valid until 2026, but the Magpies wish to extend that by another year and improve his salary, too.

With that in mind, Liverpool will have to move quickly if they want to sign Guimaraes. It seems unlikely Newcastle would accept any offer considering their comfortable financial position, though.

Also, from Guimaraes’ point of view, it would frankly be quite staggering for him to leave Newcastle – who are currently third in the league table – to join Liverpool, who have struggled this season.

Nevertheless, the Reds are allegedly poised to make an £88m offer in the coming months.
