Liverpool-linked Christian Eriksen claps the supporters

Jose Enrique has backed Liverpool to sign Christian Eriksen this summer despite links to Manchester United and Tottenham.

The Denmark international returned to the Premier League this season after Serie A regulations prevented him from playing for Inter Milan with the defibrillator he had fitted after collapsing during Euro 2020.

Eriksen grabbed four assists and a goal in the second half of the season at Brentford and impressed enough to earn interest from numerous clubs, including Tottenham and Manchester United.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of central midfielders this summer and now their former left-back Enrique reckons they should pounce for Eriksen.

“Another interesting player that could be our solution to our midfield,” Enrique said on his Instagram story. “And spending nothing because he is a free agent.

“He is a short-term solution but then we can wait for Bellingham next season – He will play if he deserves to play like everyone else. Eriksen is a top player and I believe he can compete for a starting spot in our XI. The season is very long.

“He is that kind of player, like Thiago, but maybe a little bit more offensive. But Thiago is our magician.”

Speaking on Tuesday, Eriksen said: “I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision.

“I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is, but it isn’t essential for me.”

He also added: “I don’t know why it’s hard to make a decision. Maybe because you need that last thing in order to find out what you want. It’s really hard to say what the outcome will be.

“Sometimes it can happen fast, other times it’s slow. You are not always a master of your own faith. It also depends what the possibilities are in terms of clubs. And then you have to make a decision from that. For me it’s about making the right decision.”

Eriksen continued: “I’m going on holiday and will be relaxing a bit. We are gonna go swimming, get a little tan and eat some nice food.

“I’ll have my cellphone turned on. I know my agent well enough that he will call me if anything interesting comes along, and if not, he won’t call me.”
