Liverpool star backed to become ‘terrific player’ amid Klopp ‘habit’
Liverpool starlet Harvey Elliott has been backed by Danny Murphy to become a “terrific player” as he can follow in the footsteps of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The 18-year-old came through the ranks at Fulham but he has been with Liverpool since 2019.
Following a successful loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, Elliott returned to Liverpool’s first team squad ahead of this season.
Every Premier League club’s flop of the season
The midfielder’s progress was hampered earlier this term by him suffering a serious ankle injury.
Elliott has since returned to the fold for Liverpool. He made his Champions League debut as the Reds beat Inter Milan 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Speaking after this victory, Murphy suggested that Elliott has “got great technical ability”:
“I enjoy watching him play, he’s a creative footballer whose got great technical ability,” Murphy said on talkSPORT.
“[Jurgen] Klopp’s got a habit [of this], he put Trent [Alexander-Arnold] in really early and left him in, Trent’s played it’s like he’s been there for years and he’s still only 23.
“He threw Trent in young, he’s put Curtis Jones in young. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough with Jurgen, there’s no problem with that.
“I think Harvey Elliott has got that maturity about his game which you have to have to be put in the team.
“I’m really excited to see his development. I think he’s one of those players that get fans on the edge of their seat because he’s got that silkiness, he can manipulate the ball, he can go past someone, and he’s going to score goals.
“I think it was Jamie Carragher who was talking about playing him in a similar role to [Mohamed] Salah, I’m not sure about that because I think with has ability on the ball, keeping him more central is probably the way to go, which is why I think Jurgen’s playing him in a midfield three.
“He’s going to be a terrific player, but as I say, he’s done it before [Klopp].
“Curtis Jones is developing into a superb midfield player.
“Trent, how many games has he got under his belt? And that’s because Jurgen has given him the confidence.”
