Liverpool star Joe Gomez has reportedly ‘suffered a serious injury’ to add to Jurgen Klopp’s defensive woes.

Gomez – who has become Klopp’s first choice defender in Virgil van Dijk’s absence – suffered the blow while on international duty with England.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is expected to confirm the extent of the injury later with Liverpool said to be concerned Gomez will be out for a ‘lengthy period’, according to the Daily Star.

Klopp is already without Virgil van Dijk for the majority of the season after surgery following a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Gomez was partnered by Fabinho before he too got injured and has since played alongside Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips and Joel Matip.

Gomez’s injury will leave Matip as the only senior centre-back in the Liverpool squad.

This won’t have helped Klopp’s mood after the German boss – along with many high-profile managers – questioned the tightly packed fixture list and the number of muscular injuries occurring as a result.
