Liverpool suffer blow over long-term transfer target

Liverpool have suffered a setback in their long-term pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen forward Julian Brandt.

Brandt has been linked with a move to Liverpool over the past few years, with the player himself describing speculation as “annoying” last January.

But he remains on a shortlist of young forwards that the club hold an interest in, and Liverpool could make their move either this month or in the summer.

Brandt’s father Jurgen has other ideas, however, telling German sports daily Sport Bild that: “Julian’s objective is to play in Europe with Leverkusen next season

“He’ll definitely be here until 2019. Julian feels he has unfinished business at Leverkusen.”

Leverkusen general manager Jonas Boldt added of the 21-year-old: “We think that there’s every chance he’ll extend.”
