Liverpool take two surprise names on pre-season tour

Liverpool have named a 28-man squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.

The European champions will fly out on Tuesday morning before facing Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon in the space of five days.

Liverpool will return on Thursday before rounding off their pre-season against Napoli and Lyon before the month is out.

Jurgen Klopp has named a largely unsurprising squad, save for the inclusion of Jakub Ojrzynski.

The 16-year-old goalkeeper only joined the club’s youth system from Legia Warsaw at the start of the month, but has benefited from something of a goalkeeping crisis at Anfield.

He is one of the 28 players Klopp has taken to the United States, with Andy Lonergan also travelling – although he will only feature in training.

Goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has explained the decision to bring the free agent with them.

“We do this because obviously we are really light in the goalkeeping area,” Achterberg told

“Ali is on holiday, Kamil is going out on loan to Huddersfield, Caoimhin has an injury, so that leaves us only with Si really and one young boy, Dan Atherton. We need some cover in training so we thought we’d bring someone in who can help us [so we] don’t overload the goalkeepers in training.

“Basically we’re bringing him in for training and we can try to help him get fit and we’ll see how it goes from there. It’s like he helps us and we help him to get fit.”
