Micah Richards thinks that Kalvin Phillips would be an ideal addition for Liverpool this summer, although the deal could hinge on Matheus Nunes.

It’s no secret that Phillips hasn’t had the best of times at the Etihad since making his £42m move from Leeds United last summer.

The 27-year-old barely kicked a ball last season and played a mere 291 minutes of Premier League football.

As the midfielder will be keen to get his career back on track, the idea of a loan spell has been floated. As Liverpool are still looking to reinforce their midfielders, they have been one of the clubs linked.

When given a consistent run of matches, Phillips could rediscover his best form and Richards thinks that this move would make sense.

“Well yeah Kalvin Phillips is a difficult one,” Richards told The Rest is Football Podcast. “He went to City and he got injured and then he got injured again.

“Remember him at the Euros, him and Rice with that partnership were fantastic. We know he’s got it and he’s not going to get that run of games at Man City because Rodri is the best defensive midfielder in the world.

“Would I sell him to the rivals at Liverpool? No, I wouldn’t if I’m totally honest, but I think he’s very capable of playing for Liverpool and doing well, I think he’s exactly what they need as well.”

From Man City’s perspective, they will need to sign another midfielder before allowing Phillips to leave the club on loan.

They had considered a deal for West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, but have now turned their attention to Wolves star Matheus Nunes.

Nunes is seemingly keen on the move to Manchester and he is now attempting to force the deal through by going on strike.

Alex Crook recently provided an update on the situation regarding Phillips and how likely a move is this summer.

“Yeah, Kalvin Phillips is a name that has been mentioned to me in the last couple of weeks as someone that Klopp is really interested in,” Crook told GIVEMESPORT.

“It might be possibly that Manchester City would let them go on loan. I guess that might depend on if City can get the Matheus Nunes deal over the line. Ryan Gravenberch as well, I think the interest is genuine.

“They probably are still one midfielder light. I think that’s the priority.”
