A second-string Liverpool XI thrashed a team of youngsters and players likely to leave this summer on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp watched on at Melwood as a strong Liverpool side ran out 5-0 winners in a 60-minute training match.
An XI of players who did not start the 4-0 Premier League win over West Ham on the opening day was pitted against a team of players from the Under-23 side and those expected to leave before the European transfer window closes at the end of the month.
Xherdan Shaqiri, Adam Lallana, Dominic Solanke (2) and Daniel Sturridge scored in the comprehensive victory, designed to improve the fitness of Klopp’s squad ahead of a testing season.
Fabinho, an unused substitute against West Ham, featured, while captain Jordan Henderson and Nathaniel Clyne also played.
Conor Masterson, Adam Lewis, Corey Whelan, George Johnston, Matty Virtue, Curtis Jones and Isaac Christie-Davies all played for the ‘away’ team, chosen by U23s manager Neil Critchley.
They were joined by Simon Mignolet, Marko Grujic, Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi, none of whom are likely to feature in the first team this season.
