Ex-Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has suggested that Alisson, Harvey Elliott and Luis Diaz are the “only ones playing well” for Jurgen Klopp this season.

The Reds have made a concerning start to the 2022/23 campaign after they missed out on the Premier League and Champions League last term.

They would have been keen to hit the ground running so they do not have to play catch up with Man City so early into the season.

Liverpool are already five points behind Man City, though. This comes after them winning just two of their opening six games.

Klopp’s side also got off to a losing start in the Champions League group stages. They were hammered 4-1 by Napoli last week.

The English outfit did not play over the weekend but they returned to winning ways in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

At the end of an improved showing, Joel Matip headed home an 89th minute winner for Liverpool as they beat Ajax 2-1 at Anfield.

But Enrique is concerned about Liverpool as he thinks Alisson, Diaz and Elliott are the only players who can hold their heads high so far:

“Liverpool’s struggles aren’t just down to the full-backs. When you look at the whole team, only Alisson Becker, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott are playing well – everyone else is underperforming,” Enrique told Lord Ping.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have been the two best full-backs in the world for many years and the team not performing well altogether isn’t helping them both individually.

“Jurgen Klopp has proved himself year after year and there’s no chance that he should be under pressure. You can’t argue what he has done for Liverpool and what he will continue to do for the club.

“Liverpool have a worse squad now than they did last year so it isn’t fair that people expect Klopp to fight for the same trophies that he did last year.

“The problem with Liverpool at the moment is 100 per cent to do with the lack of intensity from the players.”

Enrique also featured for Newcastle United during his playing career. Allan Saint-Maximin is currently one of their most important assets.

The flashy winger lacks final product at times but he was sensational in Newcastle’s 3-3 draw against Man City earlier this season.

The pundit went onto suggest that Saint-Maximin is capable of playing for Liverpool:

-“With the talent and quality that Allan Saint-Maximin has, he can go as far as he wants in his career. He has to be consistent because that’s what he’s been lacking,” Enrique continued.

“When he is in form he can destroy any defender in the world. If he can become consistent, he can play for Liverpool, Man City or anywhere in the world that he wants.”
