Liverpool are ‘unsure’ how long defender Joel Matip will remain out of action for, according to a report.

The former Cameroon international has missed four of Liverpool’s last five games with the issue, the 1-1 draw at Manchester United his only appearance in that time.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was optimistic about the centre-back’s fitness last week, telling a press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Genk that it was “not a serious thing”.

However, according to the Evening Standard on Monday, Matip could now face up to six weeks on the sidelines with the problem, which could rule him out of up to 10 fixtures including the game against Manchester City in November and the Merseyside derby in December.

The Liverpool Echo, though, today claim that the Reds ‘are currently unsure about a time frame regarding Matip’s return from injury.’

Dejan Lovren has started instead of Matip in Liverpool’s last two games with Joe Gomez featuring from the bench in those fixtures.

And the Echo adds: ‘The defender is not yet ready to return to training as his knee is still sore and needs treatment in the form of rehabilitation and physiotherapy.’
