Liverpool urged to sell Salah if new deal cannot be agreed

Liverpool should consider selling Mo Salah if he refuses to agree on a contract extension, according to pundit Paul Robinson.

The Egpyt international has two years remaining on the £200,000-a-week deal he signed in July 2018.

He remains an integral player at Anfield, having scored 22 goals in 37 Premier League matches last season.

However, Robinson thinks Liverpool might cash in on the forward, like they did with Philippe Coutinho.

The playmaker left for Barcelona in January 2018 for an initial £105million fee.

Speaking about Salah’s future, Robinson told Football Insider: “We have been here with Coutinho.

“Everybody was panicking when Coutinho left but the side was rebuilt on that money.

“You look at where they have gone since he left and you would have to say that they are in a better place.

“I am not an advocate of allowing players to run down their contracts. If a contract cannot be done, from a business sense, transfers have to be conducted.

“The fee Liverpool could get for Salah now would be huge. But that will not be the case in 12 months’ time when he is another year older with just 12 month left on his deal. He could quite easily then leave on a free.”

Manager Jurgen Klopp has already seen Gini Wijnaldum run down his contract and sign for Paris Saint-Germain.

The Dutchman captained Liverpool on multiple occasions last term but refused to extend his terms, making him a free agent.

Spain would be Salah’s most likely destination if he did opt to leave Anfield.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are both known admirers of the 29-year-old.

And he didn’t shut down the transfer rumours when asked about their interest in December last year.

The player said: “I think Madrid and Barcelona are two top clubs.

“Who knows what will happen in the future, but right now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool again.”

When pressed on the issue, he added: “[It’s] a tough question, but right now I can say that everything is in the hands of the club.”

Salah was signed from Roma for £34m in 2017. He’s since managed 125 goals in 203 matches for the Reds.
