Liverpool warned of Chelsea hijack for £110m man as Blues refuse to give up despite agreement
Two different sources have warned Liverpool that there’s a chance of Chelsea hijacking their £110million deal for Moises Caicedo, as the Blues continue to push despite an agreement.
Throughout the summer, the Blues seemed to have held the most serious interest in Caicedo. That continued after they attempted to sign him in January, but, along with Arsenal, saw their bid turned down.
But while this summer saw Chelsea cling to Caicedo, they failed to get close to his £100million asking price. In fact, they only entertained paying that fee when an ‘auction’ began with Liverpool ahead of a deadline set by Brighton.
But Liverpool were more than happy to pay the Seagulls’ asking price. In fact, they went above and beyond, lodging a £110million bid, which was enough for the two sides to strike an agreement.
The Reds are not out of the woods yet, though. The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg reports Chelsea ‘have not given up’ and are ‘still trying to beat’ Jurgen Klopp’s side to Caicedo, in spite of their agreement.
Sacha Tavolieri brings to light a similar fear of a hijack. Indeed, he has told Liverpool to ‘be careful’ as they are ‘not immune’ to a ‘last-minute bid’ from Chelsea.
While the Blues had failed to lodge a serious bid for some time before being pushed by the deadline, that they’re now behind the eight ball means they’ll have to surpass Liverpool’s offer.
Tavolieri also suggests a hijack would have a ‘direct impact’ on Romeo Lavia’s future. He’d actually been a major target of Liverpool’s for some time, but Chelsea recently bid £48million for him – just shy of Southampton’s £50million asking price.
While they’re seemingly making tracks in that move, snaring Caicedo would put paid to it. There might well be a return to the status quo if Chelsea are able to hijack Liverpool’s move for the Ecuadorian.
They’d been the leaders for him, and Liverpool had been the leaders for Lavia. If the Blues manage to get Caicedo for themselves, the Reds might well return for Lavia, who’ll cost less than half what they were paying for the other deal.
It remains to be seen if that is the case, but if Chelsea get their way, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Liverpool simply revert back to their original plan, knowing they desperately need a midfielder after the exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, among others.
