Liverpool are reportedly ‘willing’ to break their transfer record to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, who is considered to be Chelsea’s primary target.

The Ecuador international is widely considered to be one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and it’s no secret Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster that area this summer.

Chelsea have already seen a bid of £80m knocked back by Brighton. They are still expected to make an improved offer and have been considered to be the favourites to sign Caicedo for some time.

It now seems, however, that Liverpool could scupper their plans by tabling their own mega-money bid for Caicedo in the very near future.

According to Sky Sports Newsthe Merseyside club are ‘willing’ to break their transfer record to sign the Brighton star. The Seagulls value Caicedo at £100m and no one has come close to matching that fee, yet.

The Red’s current transfer record stands at £85m, which they paid for Darwin Nunez last summer. They are therefore set to usurp Chelsea and become the highest bidder for Caicedo, as it stands.

Sky Sports’ report has been backed up by reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claims Liverpool will definitely make an offer for the midfielder.

On TwitterRomano wrote: “Moises Caicedo, in London, waiting for key developments on his future.

“Brighton, waiting for Liverpool to send their official bid — if not tonight, it has to be Friday. Liverpool will 100% bid.

“Then, it will be also up to Chelsea. The highest bidder will get Brighton’s green light.”

It’s no secret that Liverpool are looking to add another quality midfielder to their squad before the transfer window slams shut.

The exact amount they are set to put on the table for Caicedo remains to be seen, but they are evidently pushing incredibly hard to sign him.

The Reds have lost the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and have only brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to replace them so far.

Romeo Lavia is one midfield target they have a concrete interest in but it now seems Caicedo has become their number one priority.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have sold Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and saw the departure of N’Golo Kante earlier this summer. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Mauricio Pochettino is interested in signing a player like Caicedo.

The battle for the Brighton star’s signature looks set to heat up over the next few days, so it will be very interesting to see if Liverpool or Chelsea come out on top.
