Sean Longstaff thinks Newcastle United’s performance at Leicester City on Sunday was “f***ing embarrassing”.

Just eight games into Steve Bruce’s reign at St James’ Park, the Magpies’ head coach is feeling the full backlash from fans still furious at the departure of predecessor Rafael Benitez during the summer and fearing the worst following an alarming start to the season.

Newcastle were humiliated on Sunday when a Jamie Vardy brace and further goals from Ricardo Pereira, Paul Dummett (OG) and Wilfried Ndidi condemned Bruce’s men to a 5-0 defeat.

Longstaff told the Daily Mail: “It’s f***ing embarrassing. Sorry for swearing, but it is. There’s nothing really much else to say. We should never put the fans in a position where they’re cheering just for the sake of it.

“We’ve got to be much, much better than that. It’s a massive wake-up call, if there hadn’t been already. We’ve got to forget it as quickly as we can. Hopefully, there are no more days like that to come.”

Summer signing Andy Carroll was also fuming with the result at the King Power Stadium, calling their display “terrible”.

Carroll added: “We should hang our heads in shame. The whole lot of us. We were terrible. We were not like that in training, so we shouldn’t be like that on a weekend.

“When Leicester’s second goal went in, our heads went down and we gave up, basically.

“We’ve got a good team. We’ve got strength. We’ve got depth. We’ve got a good manager. We know what we need to do. We just need to show it.”
