Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus says Liverpool are “very popular” with Thiago Alcantara amid transfer links to Anfield.

Midfielder Thiago was first linked with Liverpool late last month, with the Reds said to be ‘very close’ to securing a deal.

Liverpool were initially believed to have shelved their transfer plans this summer as a result of the financial impact of the global pandemic, while Jurgen Klopp has stated that the club “cannot spend millions and millions”.

The Reds boss kept his cards close to his chest when asked about possible interest in Thiago, Klopp said: “Thiago Alcantara is a really good player. Like a lot of other players out there, I like (him) a lot. But that’s all I have to say about that.”

But Matthaus reckons a move to Anfield could happen this summer as Thiago would be a great “fit” for Jurgen Klopp and his team.

“[For] Thiago, I’m pretty sure the signs are goodbye,” Matthaus told Sport Buzzer (via the Liverpool Echo)

“What else would he have for not having accepted Bayern’s offer?

“Liverpool is obviously very popular with him and he would absolutely love the football and the team from Jürgen Klopp fit.”
