A mistake in Chelsea’s Super Cup programme saw Frank Lampard label David Luiz a “hugely important” player, despite him now playing for Arsenal.

The centre-back left Stamford Bridge in an £8million deal on transfer deadline day.

In his programme notes, Lampard praised the Brazilian, hailing him as a crucial member of the squad along with captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Luiz was reportedly refusing to train before he left the club, but the Chelsea manager denied this.

Lampard revealed that “honest conversations” between himself and former team-mate Luiz led to his exit from Stamford Bridge.

“We had some conversations over the last week, honest ones and the conclusion was that he should move on.” Lampard told Talksport.

“There certainly wasn’t any strikes. I’ll make that clear straight away. And in terms of fall-outs, no, there weren’t. There were honest conversations.

“As a player, I always respected honesty from a manager whatever the news. And I think I got that back from David hence why he ends up moving on to Arsenal. There were no strikes.

“The day that David didn’t train was a decision that I made because we were in the middle of this where we were talking and it was quite clear which way it was going.

“But that was not a strike, or a punishment, or being ostracised at all.”

Luiz will be hoping to make his debut for Arsenal against Burnley in the early kickoff on Saturday.
