Romelu Lukaku has hailed new Chelsea teammate Jorginho having experienced his quality first hand in training.

Lukaku rejoined Chelsea for £98m this summer, seven years after he left Stamford Bridge for Everton.

The Belgian opened his Chelsea account in the 2-0 win over Arsenal and has been widely tipped to drive Thomas Tuchel’s side to Premier League glory this term.

He’s now spent a few weeks training with his new Blues teammates and has been particularly impressed by Jorginho, who was part of the Italy team that defeated his Belgium side in the quarter-final of Euro 2020.

“I see someone like Jorginho every day now. That guy is really good at football,” Lukaku told VTM Nieuws.

“I also played two years against Insigne, who plays at the top of his game. They were all top. Tactically, we were outclassed [against Italy], but also football-wise. And that hurt.”

Jorginho became the tenth player to win both the Champions League and European Championship in the same season and was also named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, beating fellow Premier League stars Kevin De Bruyne and N’Golo Kante to the accolade.

And Chelsea boss Tuchel recently lauded his midfield star, who “controls the rhythm of a game” for the Blues.

“I think Jorgi is a very strategic player,” Tuchel said.

“He can play in advance, knows what to do in ball possession, can imagine what is going to happen in one or two passes ahead.

“He knows where to help out in short distances and long distances, when to switch the play, when not to switch the play. He has a good sense of rhythm.

“He lacks, if you isolate him or watch him separately, the pure physical ability that makes him the number one candidate to be a number six in the Premier League.

“But once you have him in a structure, he is very well organised in his game, he organises all the environment around him, which helps him then, when everything is organised, and then he can show his true abilities in controlling the rhythm of a game.”
