Inter Milan are reportedly interested in bringing Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku back to the San Siro this summer after his nightmare return to Stamford Bridge.

The Belgium international joined the Blues last summer for £97.5m after scoring 64 goals in 95 appearances for Inter in the 2020/21 campaign.

Many tipped Lukaku to hit the ground running on his return to the Premier League but the 29-year-old has struggled to have an impact at Chelsea this term.

Lukaku finished the season as the Blues’ top goalscorer in all competitions on 15 but he could only manage eight Premier League goals under Thomas Tuchel.

While his performances have been criticised, the Belgian was also in the spotlight off the pitch and issued an apology earlier in the season for a interview with Italian TV which expressed his desire to return to Inter Milan one day.

Since that interview there have been rumours that he could leave this summer with his agent Federico Pastorello admitting that there has been a “problem” for Lukaku under Tuchel.

“Given the transfer parameters, nobody could expect this situation,” Pastorello told La Repubblica earlier this month.

“I won’t discuss technical choices, but it’s clear that there was a problem. However, his numbers must be put into context. He is the best scorer in the team despite getting less playing time than his teammates.

“Now we must defend a Champions League spot and play the FA Cup final. That’s the only thing Romelu is focused on, we haven’t talked about anything else.”

And now The Times claim that Lukaku ‘plans to hold talks with Chelsea about his future this summer once the club’s hierarchy has been established under a new ownership led by Todd Boehly’.

The US magnate completed his takeover of the Premier League club on Monday, bringing to an end Roman Abramovich’s 19-year reign at Stamford Bridge.

With the futures of director Marina Granovskaia and chairman Bruce Buck currently uncertain, Lukaku ‘will await the confirmed appointments under the American businessman before initiating a meeting’.

The report also claims that Inter ‘have shown interest in bringing the prolific striker back to the San Siro’ with a loan move potentially providing the most ‘viable’ option due to Lukaku’s huge wages in excess of £300k a week.
