Luke Shaw “was like a son” to Mauricio Pochettino, according to Jose Fonte.
Pochettino managed Shaw for 18 months after being appointed Southampton boss in January 2013.
His predecessor Nigel Adkins had handed Shaw his Premier League debut for the club beforehand, but the left-back stepped up in his development under Pochettino.
He was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in the 2013/14 season – his only full campaign under Pochettino’s management.
The two then parted ways, Pochettino leaving to manage Tottenham, while Shaw was signed by Manchester United.
Fonte, who was with the pair at Southampton, says their relationship was like father and son.
“He would put an arm around you and make you feel special. It’s good,” Fonte told the BBC.
“I remember Luke Shaw was like a son to him. Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and myself all had a great relationship with him. He was tough as well when he had to be.”
