Man City back on FFP watch list after record spree

Manchester City are back on the Financial Fair Play watch list after a summer of record spending.

The only surprising aspect of this news is that FFP is still a thing after seemingly taking a hiatus of a couple of seasons, but it is back with a vengeance with regards to City.

Pep Guardiola’s side have spent just over £218million so far this summer, already breaking the record for a single-window transfer spree, set by Real Madrid in 2009.

The outlay includes two world-record deals for defenders, with Benjamin Mendy following Kyle Walker through the door, both for over £50m.

Bernardo Silva and Ederson have also arrived for £43m and £34.9m respectively, while Danilo (£26.5m) and Douglas Luiz (£10.9m) complete the deals so far.

Alexis Sanchez and Kylian Mbappe are also potential targets, but City may have to be careful under the watchful eye of FFP regulators.

The Daily Telegraph report that UEFA are wary of both City and Paris Saint-Germain’s plans this summer, and that their activity is being ‘scrutinised’ after previous punishments.

James Ducker writes: ‘Both City and PSG have to tread carefully because a second breach of FFP would leave them open to more ­severe punishment from Uefa, including a ban from European competition.’
