Dusan Vlahovic

Manchester City reportedly offered €70million for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic this summer, but the player chose to stay at the Italian club.

The Premier League champion’s number one target was Tottenham and England star Harry Kane, but both clubs were unable to agree on a fee for the 28-year-old.

And an alternative to Kane emerged in Serbia international Vlahovic.

Sergio Aguero departed Manchester this summer, joining FC Barcelona, so Pep Guardiola was seeking a new striker in the summer transfer window.

Italian outlet La Repubblica (via Sport Witness) reported in August that Man City had bid €55m for Vlahovic, but Fiorentina chairman Rocco Commisso wanted €100m.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport (again via Sport Witness) claim the offer was more than that in an article on Monday.

They have looked at his contract situation now the window has shut, also claiming the player wanted to stay in Florence – echoing what Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Italiano said last month.

The belief is that the 21-year-old will sign a new contract that will include a release clause of ‘at least €80m’ after ‘City and Atletico, with bonuses, had already put €70m on the plate’.

An agreement ‘should be found quickly’, meaning there is a chance Vlahovic will be available for a set price next year.

The Citizens could go back in for Kane, however. Especially if he goes another season without winning a trophy at Spurs.

Elsewhere, Gabby Abgonlahor has claimed he would take Kane – who is yet to win a trophy in his career – over five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in a cup final.

On the England captain, Jamie O’Hara asked Agbonlahor: “Is he the best striker in the world? Is he right up there?

To which the former Aston Villa striker said: “I think he is, yeah, I think because of what’s happened in the summer, Ronaldo coming to the Premier League, Lukaku, I think we forget about Harry Kane.

“His goal record in the Premier League, his performances last season, dropping off, his assists, his goals. If there’s anyone in the Premier League that you want a chance to fall to it’s Harry Kane, isn’t it? I’ve never seen someone finish like him.”

O’Hara asks: “Who would you have in a cup final? Harry Kane or Ronaldo?”

Agbonlahor replied: “I’m having Harry Kane.”
