Journalist Julien Laurens believes Manchester City are “going to find an agreement” to sign Lucas Paqueta from West Ham, and thinks it would be “game over” for the season.

City have had a relatively subdued summer transfer window. While they’ve spent north of £100million, they’ve done so for just two players: Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol.

A lot of sides have been more active, but City seemingly feel their funds are better spent on big players in areas which need improvement, rather than a number of small additions.

Since that pair walked through the door, Pep Guardiola has been attempting to sign West Ham’s Paqueta. A reported offer of £87million has followed the opening £70million bid for the midfielder.

West Ham are said to want £95million if they’re to let the Brazilian go. It’s not difficult to see why the Hammers are holding out for so much, having lost Paqueta’s midfield parter Declan Rice already this summer.

Journalist Laurens believes City will manage to sign him amid the hefty demands from West Ham.

“Lots of money for Paqueta, of course, I mean the second offer around the £85m, £90m was rejected by West Ham,” he told ESPN.

“I think they’re going to find an agreement and Paqueta really wants to go to City and you can understand why.

“I think if City sign him, it’s pretty [much] game over for this season. I think he will be an incredible signing for them, he will fit in so well and they will be so strong with him.”

City are already one of the favourites to win the title, and that’s to be expected having won it three years on the bounce. Adding Paqueta to the side will only make them stronger and heighten their chances of doing so for a fourth year.

The midfielder ranks very high in terms of shot-creating actions, take-ons and touches compared to midfielders in top-five European leagues. The other side to his game is also in good nick, as he’s also high on the list in terms of tackles and blocks, per FBREF.

Laurens believes Paqueta is a top player that’ll have a massive impact, and will be worth the hefty fee City will need to pay to land him.

“City will get an amazing player that Pep can use pretty much everywhere in the midfield. I’m sure he can even play higher up the pitch,” Laurens added.

“Yeah, they will have to spend £100m again after [Jack] Grealish, after Gvardiol, it’s another £100m player but I think he’s really worth every penny of it.”
