Man United should go out and sign PSG defender Marquinhos as it would ensure that they are title contenders next season, according to Joleon Lescott.

Marquinhos has been with PSG since he joined from Roma in 2013. He made the move for around €31m.

The defender has totted up over 200 appearances for the Ligue 1 side since his transfer.

OPINION: United play the hits in yet another trademark away win from behind

He has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent months to reunite with his former boss Thomas Tuchel.

Marquinhos’ contract does not expire until 2024, so it will take a sizeable fee if PSG are going to be tempted into letting him leave for Man United, Chelsea, or someone else.

Lescott appeared on Sky Sports in the lead up to United’s game against Villa on Sunday. As cited by the Daily Star, he encouraged the Red Devils to make a move for the defender:

“That is the biggest thing, for me. Harry Kane, yes, he would improve them, but I think it’s more important to go and get a centre-half.

“I was speaking to Rio [Ferdinand] recently, we were talking about Marquinhos

“I think if they were to get him, someone of that stature, that would instantly propel them into contenders.

“If they don’t do that, yeah they can score goals and win games but they can’t rely on the defensive side of their game against the bigger teams in the league.”

Meanwhile, Ashley Young has suggested tat he could not “understand” Man United’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku:

“I said it at the time, I couldn’t understand the decision (to sell Lukaku),” Young said. “Whether it was made quickly or not, Romelu has proved a lot of people wrong.

“He’s worked unbelievably hard. There was talk that he was overweight and couldn’t do this or that. He’s smashed records and made history in Italy, he’s been unbelievable for the club.

“For me he was fantastic even in the Premier League. To go out there and face another challenge, I think it was the right choice for him. He deserves all the plaudits he is getting.”
