Manchester United players celebrate winning the League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium, London, February 2023.

9 amazing stats from Man Utd’s League Cup final win vs. Newcastle

Manchester United have won the first domestic trophy of the 2022-23 season after beating Newcastle United 2-0 in Sunday’s League Cup final.

Casemiro broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when he headed home Luke Shaw’s free-kick to send half of Wembley Stadium berserk.

United doubled their advantage after Sven Botman deflected Marcus Rashford’s shot out of the reach of Newcastle’s stand-in keeper Loris Karius, deputising for suspended Nick Pope.

Newcastle pushed hard to restore parity after the break, but United held on to secure a long-awaited piece of silverware.

And we’ve identified nine amazing stats from the match that’ll make United supporters swoon.

– Manchester United have ended a trophy drought that extended back to May 2017, five years and 278 days ago.

– This ends their longest wait for a major trophy since 1983, when they won the FA Cup six years and five days after their previous honour, the FA Cup in 1977.

– Casemiro has scored four goals in his last 12 games in all competitions, one more goal than he had scored across his previous 89 matches.

– He won more duels than any other player in the first half, while no player made more tackles than the Brazilian (3).

– Despite his goal being credited to Sven Botman, Rashford had another brilliant game for United. He won seven ground duels, made two key passes and completed four dribbles as he tormented the Newcastle defence.

– Erik ten Hag is the first ever Dutch manager in the competition’s history to win the League Cup.

– Despite only coming on at half-time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka made the most tackles of any player (seven in 45 minutes).

– This is the most tackles in a League Cup final since N’Golo Kante for Chelsea in 2019 (seven in 120 minutes).

– David De Gea has now kept 181 clean sheets for Manchester United, that’s more than any other goalkeeper in the club’s history. Peter Schmeichel kept 180, while Alex Stepney recorded 175 in United colours.
