Man Utd are reportedly ‘close’ to reaching a contract agreement with Alejandro Garnacho but he is attracting interest from La Liga.

The 18-year-old was previously with Atletico Madrid as an academy player but he signed for Man Utd in 2020 for around £420,000.

Garnacho featured a couple of times for United last season but he has been given more opportunities by Erik ten Hag this term.

He has had two goal contributions in the Premier League in six outings and he has also made an impact in cup competitions.

Ex-player Mikael Silvestre is “excited” to see more from Garnacho in the coming months.

“It’s not going his (Jadon Sancho) way at the moment but I hope he will keep the belief because he has a lot of potential to do well at United,” Silvestre told bettingexpert.

“He did it at Dortmund so I can’t see why he can’t reach that level at United.

“It is problematic but we have a good squad. Elanga, Garnacho, Anthony, Martial, Rashford. We can cope and hopefully give him time to get back to his best.

“I’m excited to see Garnacho getting more game time to see how he progresses. You always want to see new faces.

“Him and Marcus Rashford. I hope Rashford continues that journey of being positive, scoring goals and becoming more of a leader for the team.”

Garnacho is under contract until 2o24 and it was reported last month that United are willing to offer him a big-money contract to retain him long-term.

Fichajes are reporting that Atletico Madrid have identified Garnacho as a ‘surprise target’ and they ‘want to bring him back’ to the club. Their interest is said to be a ‘surprise’ as they let him go a couple of years ago.

Atletico are not alone though as Garnacho is said to have ‘offers’ from them and Real Madrid.

It is said that Atletico ‘want to prevent one of their homegrown players from joining the squad of their greatest rival’.

This will not be an ‘easy task’ though as it said that Garnacho signing a contract extension at Man Utd is ‘closer than it seems’.

Speaking in November, Ten Hag encouraged Garnacho to “keep his feet on the ground”.

“There is still for him a long way to go. He has to keep his feet on the ground, the whole team now but him especially,” Ten Hag said.

“He has to do much more to impress because he will be recognisable for everyone. So it’s much more important that to confirm it and big players know that, young players don’t know.

“His energy is good and I am certain he will have an impact.”
