Man Utd caught napping as Euro giant swoops for defensive target in £21m transfer offer

Inter Milan have sent a £21million proposal to Bayern Munich for Benjamin Pavard, as per Fabrizio Romano, while Manchester United were waiting for Harry Maguire to leave in order to sign the defender.

Maguire has been targeted by a few sides this summer. The suggestion that he might be better served moving away from Old Trafford has come due to a few factors.

Firstly, he played just 16 Premier League games last season – eight from the start – just three years after United spent £80million on him. He was also stripped of the club captaincy in a show of no faith from Erik ten Hag this summer.

His exit to West Ham, which United agreed, was supposed to pave the way for the signing of Bayern man Pavard. Indeed, it was stated the Frenchman’s move would ‘only happen’ if Maguire left.

The United man decided not to make the move, though, believing he will get “plenty of opportunities” to play for the Red Devils this season.

Romano has since revealed a United deal for Pavard is “stalling” due to that move not happening, but not completely off just yet. However, as they’re caught up in waiting to see where Maguire goes, Inter Milan have swooped.

Indeed, a subsequent report from Romano states Inter’s ‘formal proposal’ of approximately £21million has been ‘sent today’.

Throughout the summer, Pavard has been looking for an exit route, and Romano reinforces the fact the defender ‘wants to leave’ and actually states he ‘insists with the club’.

It’s not clear if he insists for them to accept Inter’s offer, as he was said to be keen on a move to United. However, that he is desperate to leave means he might be willing to move anywhere, and Inter could be the beneficiaries of that.

The deal won’t be all too easy, though, as Romano states that ‘due to Bayern requests’ things will be ‘difficult’. With that being said, it’s not clear if Inter will be able to get the deal over the line just yet.

If not, United might be able to find their way back into the reckoning, but it seems that’ll still hinge on Maguire’s exit, which looks unlikely due to his reasons for snubbing a West Ham move.
