Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is on the verge of leaving Old Trafford to join Serie A side Roma on loan, according to reports.
Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has an abundance of centre-backs to choose from after Harry Maguire arrived from Leicester City in an £80million deal in the summer.
Despite that, the Norwegian reportedly blocked a deal that would have seen Smalling leave the club on transfer deadline day.
And now there are reports Smalling will join Roma on loan until the end of the season – but there is no option to buy the defender.
Fabrizio Romano, who provides transfer news for Sky Sports and The Guardian, claims a deal that would see Smalling move to Roma is almost done.
Romano wrote on Twitter: “Chris Smalling to AS Roma from Man United, here we go!
“Total agreement for a simple loan (€3M to Man Utd) without buy option. The player has accepted.”
