Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani has pledged to take a big cut in pay in order to join Boca Juniors after agreeing verbally to join the Argentinian club in the summer, according to reports.

The Uruguayan has contributed six goals and two assists in 18 Premier League appearances this campaign with the 34-year-old proving a useful addition at times this season since his summer move from Paris Saint-Germain.

There have been rumours that Cavani will leave Man Utd in the summer to join Boca Juniors and Football Insider now claim that he is ‘willing to take a huge pay cut to join’ the South American giants.

Cavani has ‘made up his mind’ and will leave the Red Devils in the summer with the former Napoli striker ‘eager to join’ Boca.

He will take a ‘massive cut on his current deal’ at Man Utd which is understood to stand at around £200,000 a week.

Football Insider adds that there is a ‘verbal agreement’ with Boca and that a ‘deal is on the table and the player has indicated he will sign it, despite the drastic reduction in his pay.’

Uruguay assistant coach Mario Rebollo recently reacted to the rumours Cavani could return to South America.

Rebollo said: “It helps the national team if Cavani goes to Boca or wherever.

“The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and with a good competitive level. If he’s close to here it’d be great, but if he’s not comfortable he would not bear it much.

“It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable. It makes no difference to me if it’s Boca or another place, just where he’s better.

“We have to have him with rhythm and competition.”

Speaking recently, Cavani’s father also discussed his son’s future, he said: “My son is not happy in England and wants to return nearer his family. He wants to play in South America.

“I want Edinson to play for a team which fights for important trophies. He has had many conversations with [Boca vice-president Juan Roman] Riquelme and would like to play for Boca.

“At the halfway point of the year, he’d like to return to South America. My son’s idea is not to continue there [in Manchesvter]. He wants to return.

“I think he’s going to come back in June this year. He has a clause in his contract which allows him to leave in June.”
