Man Utd are stepping up their interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to reports in Germany.

The Germany international was in and out the Bayern side last season as they comfortably won the Bundesliga under Hansi Flick.

He only started 18 matches last season but managed to contribute five goals and five assists for Die Roten, who will be managed by Julian Nagelsmann in the upcoming season.

Can this Man United have another trophyless season?

Man Utd were linked with a move for the 26-year-old at the back end of June with the Premier League club lining up a deal for the Bayern Munich star if Paul Pogba leaves this summer.

The Bundesliga side are struggling to get Goretzka to sign a new contract with the Germany international seeing the €19.5 per year offered to David Alaba – who has joined Barcelona on a free transfer – as the benchmark for any negotiations.

Goretzka has proven himself to be one of the top players in Germany, and new Bayern boss Nagelsmann is aware of his talent.

Nagelsmann said earlier this month: “Leon is an important player for us. I would be happy to work with him for many years.

“I think very highly of him. He is one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world. Everyone likes to have him in their team.”

The midfielder only has a year left on his contract at the Allianz Arena but Bild (via Sport Witness) strangely claim that the ‘pressure’ is on Goretzka to make a decision over his future.

With Man Utd looking to pounce on his contract situation, Goretzka has apparently become ‘irritated’ that Bayern have so far failed to renew talks after initial discussions took place earlier this year.

The Red Devils have now put ‘concrete salary figures’ on the table –  believed to be better than the proposal from the German club – and Man Utd are now ‘getting serious’ over their interest in Goretzka.

It is understood that Bayern are only willing to offer him between €10m and €12m to sign whereas Goretzka wants €20m to do a deal.

Earlier this month, Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn claimed contract talks had started with Goretzka, along with one of his team-mates.

“We’re in talks with Goretzka and [Kingsley] Coman,” he said. “Absolute top players want to be paid accordingly, we’re not naive about that. That’s perfectly fine. With us, there is a limit, which is very clearly defined.”

Kahn remains confident about a new deal for both players due to the experience that Bayern can offer.

“I am optimistic. We have a great package to offer here.

“They always have the chance to win big titles with us and can help shape an era.”
