Man Utd target Santiago Gimenez looks for the ball

Man Utd have made initial contact as they eye up a summer move for Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has been in brilliant form for the Dutch club this season with Gimenez contributing 18 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions for Arne Slot’s side.

Gimenez only joined Feyenoord in the summer transfer window from Mexican side Cruz Azul and he’s enjoying a wonderful first season.

Feyenoord, who are currently eight points ahead of second-placed Ajax, are leading the Eredivisie and through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

And the Mexico international’s form has not gone unnoticed elsewhere in Europe with W Deportes claiming that Man Utd have ‘been following the Mexican closely for several games’ and that there is already ‘first contact’ over a potential transfer.

It is understood that Man Utd are ‘the team most interested’ in Gimenez’s services and there has ‘been a talk with the player’s environment’ to see if a summer move is possible.

The Mexican outlet thinks Gimenez could be a cheap alternative to Harry Kane with the forward’s release clause set at ‘close to €20m (£17.5m)’.

Man Utd are having a good first season under Erik ten Hag and the Dutchman will be hopeful of funds to carry on making improvements to his squad, especially if they qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils are currently well placed to do that with Ten Hag’s side three points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

Ten Hag has already guided Man Utd to Carabao Cup glory this season and he could potentially deliver two more trophies with the Red Devils still in the FA Cup and Europa League.

And the Daily Mail claim that Man Utd are ‘oiling the exit doors this summer as they look to move out up to 13 players’ as they look to ‘reduce a bloated squad’ and stay within Financial Fair Play regulations.

The report adds:

‘Winger Anthony Elanga has over 12 clubs keen to take him and he is ready for a fresh challenge while there are not too many surprises in who else will be allowed to follow.

‘Eric Bailly has underwhelmed at Marseille and the French side don’t wish to make that move permanent. A £5m fee would have been triggered after 19 league games but they are keen to send the 28-year-old back.

‘Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Alex Telles, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams and Anthony Martial all have question marks over their future too.

‘United have held meetings with representatives of players, such as Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, and their priority remains a striker, then midfielder, centre-back, right-back and possibly a goalkeeper.

‘Amad Diallo is likely to be given a first team chance following his spell at Sunderland while Facundo Pellistri could go on loan for more experience once a new contract is wrapped up.’
