According to reports, Man Utd have made an approach for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, who is out of contract in 2023.
The Uruguay international joined Barcelona in 2018. He signed a long-term deal when he joined the club and made his senior debut in 2019.
Araujo broke into the Barcelona first team last season and has established himself as a key part of their defence this term.
He has been linked with Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as Man Utd, in recent months with Araujo looking for a pay rise to commit to the Catalan side.
Earlier this month, Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand named Araujo as one of two central defenders the Old Trafford club should sign.
“I would sign Marquinhos and I would sign the Uruguayan at Barcelona [Araujo],” Ferdinand said on Vibe with Five.
According to Spanish publication ABC (via Sport Witness), Man Utd have ‘already approached’ the Uruguayan.
Barcelona are eager for Araujo to renew his contract, but may be forced to cash in on him in the upcoming summer transfer window if he has not been tied down to a new deal.
The Catalan club have reportedly offered the 23-year-old €4m a year; a figure that is seen as too low by the player.
Furthermore, it is stated that €4m is a ‘far cry’ from what is being offered in the Premier League, with Man Utd making it clear that they will put ‘more than double that amount on the table’.
It is said that Araujo is keen to remain at the Nou Camp, but wants to be paid what he feels he is worth, meaning a transfer to England should not be ruled out.
Sources at the Catalan club suggest that there is ‘no intention’ of raising their €4m offer much more.
