Romano: Man Utd signing gets ‘here we go’ confirmation; will trigger sale of 26-year-old outcast
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United have completed the signing of Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana.
David de Gea left the Red Devils upon the expiry of his contract earlier this month and Erik ten Hag identified Onana as his primary replacement target.
After weeks of negotiations, it seems the manager has finally got it man, so it will be interesting to see how Onana performs for Man Utd next season.
It is believed that the keeper will sign a five-year deal with the option for a sixth. This comes after a transfer fee of around £47m (including add-ons) was reportedly agreed upon by the two clubs.
This was confirmed by Romano on Twitter. He claims that Onana’s switch to Old Trafford is now finalised.
He wrote: “Andre Onana to Manchester United, it’s finally here we go!
“Clubs are closing in on the agreement then Onana will travel for medical tests and contract signing.
“Man Utd set to request VISA for Onana for USA trip. Ten Hag will have the new goalkeeper he wanted.”
Last season, Onana made 41 appearances for Inter across all competitions. In the process, he conceded just 36 goals, kept 19 clean sheets and helped his team reach the Champions League final.
The Cameroon international has won plenty of trophies with Inter and Ajax, something that Man Utd fans will hope to see more of over the next few years.
One of Onana’s best attributes is his passing. That is something that De Gea struggled with, which prevented the Red Devils from playing out from the back.
With that in mind, Onana’s arrival at Old Trafford could also bring about a change in Man Utd’s playing style.
That won’t be the only thing that changes because of the 27-year-old, though.
As per a seperate report from Romano, the impending signing of Onana could have an impact on Man Utd’s backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
Romano added: “Manchester United and Nottingham Forest will be in contact again this week to discuss Dean Henderson permanent deal.
“This is part of Man United plan; let Henderson leave once Onana signs. Zion Suzuki, one of the options as new backup GK as called days ago.”
Henderson spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest. Steve Cooper was impressed with the England international despite him falling behind Keylor Navas in the pecking order.
Henderson is keen on signing for the Tricky Trees permanently and Man Utd are happy to sell him for the right price this summer.
The Red Devils will have to bring in a new back-up keeper as a result. As stated by Romano, Japan goalkeeper Suzuki is at the top of Man Utd’s shortlist.
Nothing is officially confirmed yet, but Onana’s switch to Old Trafford looks 100% done. With that in mind, Henderson and Suzuki will be two players for Man Utd fans to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks.
