Harry Maguire has been told a move away from Manchester United could be the best thing for his career as West Ham step up their interest.

It’s no secret that Maguire has had a tough 12 months at Old Trafford. The 30-year-old has been a bit-part player under Erik ten Hag and he’s struggled to find much form.

He’s recently been stripped of the Man Utd captaincy and a move this summer seems more than likely, despite some reports claiming Ten Hag wants to keep the defender.

West Ham are interested in taking both Maguire and Scott McTominay as they look to splash the cash they received from selling Declan Rice.

Former Man Utd star Mikael Silvestre thinks Ten Hag made the right call on the captaincy decision and he thinks a move this summer could be good for Maguire.

“The captaincy should always go to a player that plays every game,” Silvestre told GGrecon. “If your team plays 55 games across a season, then you should expect your captain to play 55 games. That’s how I see things.

“You need a captain that’s consistent, has influence and for those reasons, it’s completely understandable that Bruno Fernandes was awarded the captaincy.

“Regarding whether Harry Maguire should stay or go, then that all depends on how much gametime he’s going to get at Manchester United next season.

“If he’s not going to play often, then it’s probably best for him to leave this summer and find the right project for himself that will give him the best opportunity to continue playing for England.

“It would be good to see him enjoying himself because the last few months have been a frustrating period for him.”

Man Utd are said to be looking for around £35m for Maguire this summer as West Ham continue to be linked with the defender.

A move to West Ham could tick a lot of boxes for Maguire. He will be afforded plenty of first team opportunities and he will get the chance to play in Europe too.

If Maguire is hoping to hold down a spot in the England squad, a move this summer would surely be the best thing for his career. The 30-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, with the option of a further year.
