Man Utd have added RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate to their transfer shortlist as they look to plan for the next transfer window with Napoli holding firm over their asking price for Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports.
The Red Devils splashed out a world record fee for a defender to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City last summer, and despite the England man being a success so far, they now need to find a reliable centre-back partner for him to really tighten things up at the back.
According to Le10 Sport, Man Utd ‘recently contacted the entourage of the player [Konate] to take the necessary information on his situation and his desires’.
Konate, who is exactly the same height as the imposing Harry Maguire, had been linked with Arsenal just over a year ago, and has since gone on to cement his place as a regular for France’s Under-21 side.
The report from France adds that ‘without an XXL offer’ Konate will stay in Germany as he still has a contract with Leipzig until 2023.
Le10Sport continues by claiming that Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, Victor Osimhen at Lille, Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder and Moussa Dembele at Lyon make up the rest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s five-man shortlist.
The news that Man Utd are interested in Konate comes around the same time that they could lose out on Koulibaly to Liverpool, with reports in Italy that the Merseysiders are now leading the race.
The Reds are in a better position than both Man Utd and Real Madrid because of Napoli’s interest in taking Dejan Lovren in the opposite direction.
