Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Man Utd can win the Champions League this season, to the amusement of Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry.

With the Premier League title out of reach, Europe’s premier competition is the Red Devils’ only chance of winning a trophy this season.

Man Utd were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham in the third round and lost in the FA Cup against Championship side Middlesbrough.

Two-legged Champions League ties should be next for UEFA axe

They take on La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League and play the first leg in the Spanish capital next week.

On Tuesday evening, Man City won 5-0 away to Sporting to take a commanding aggregate lead against their last 16 opponents.

And Schmeichel was asked by Richards during CBS Sports’ coverage of the match if Man Utd can win the competition.

Richards asked: “Peter, do you honestly believe that Manchester United can win the Champions League? Be honest with me now, no messing around.”

After a pause, Schmeichel answered: “Yes. What kind of a question is that?”

Henry, Carragher and Richards burst out laughing at the Man Utd legend’s response. Carragher replied: “What kind of an answer is that?!”

The Red Devils topped their group including Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys.

Their Premier League form under Ralf Rangnick has been poor in recent weeks, but Man Utd picked up a valuable win against Brighton on Tuesday night.

And former Premier League striker Dion Dublin has hailed Paul Pogba’s contribution off the bench in the 2-0 victory.

Pogba recently returned from injury after missing 14 matches and after three consecutive starts, the Frenchman was dropped to the bench for Tuesday’s match against the Seagulls.

He was introduced with Man Utd leading 1-0 with Brighton down to ten men and assisted Bruno Fernandes’ last-gasp goal to seal the win.

“Paul Pogba changed the game when he came on,” Dublin said. “His little bit of quality, picking the right passes.

“He put Brighton on the back foot.”
