Man Utd are very close to confirming the signing of Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils are looking to bring in a new shot-stopper after Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka saw his loan prematurely ended.

Signing someone to compete with the experienced David de Gea has been a priority for Erik ten Hag since Dean Henderson made it clear he did not want to play second-fiddle to the Spaniard.

Dubravka was signed early on in Ten Hag’s tenure, though his only two appearances before returning to the north east came in the Carabao Cup.

Unfortunately for the Slovakian, Ten Hag named strong line-ups in the Europa League, where he surely expected to frequently play when he agreed to sign.

A report earlier this week stated that Man Utd were in talks to sign Butland from Palace.

Butland has only managed 17 appearances for the Eagles since joining from Stoke City in 2020, with Vicente Guaita the undisputed No. 1 at Selhurst Park.

Palace’s signing of Sam Johnstone on a free transfer last summer moved the nine-cap England goalkeeper further down the pecking order.

Butland is out of contract at the end of the season, though it is expected that he will only join Man Utd on a six-month loan, meaning he will probably become a free agent in the summer.

This was first reported by Guillermo Rai, who says the experienced shot-stopper will undergo his Red Devils medical on Thursday.

Fabrizio Romano believes the deal is close to being completed and has said those three beautiful words: Here We Go.

Butland will join Man Utd to compete with Tom Heaton as back-up to De Gea.

The Red Devils had been strongly interested in bringing Borussia Monchengladbach ‘keeper Yann Sommer to Old Trafford.

The Swiss international was first linked with a move to the Premier League last summer, with his Gladbach contract set to expire at the end of 2022-23.

According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich now have a ‘verbal agreement’ to sign Sommer on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Bayern No. 1 Manuel Neuer is out for the rest of the campaign after breaking his leg in a skiing accident.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg says Sommer looks set to move to the Allianz Arena in January after Monaco refused to let on-loan ‘keeper Alexander Nubel return to Germany.

Sommer ‘only wants to join Bayern’, in a blow to Man Utd and Ten Hag.

There were some rumours that De Gea’s future at Old Trafford was in doubt, however, it is now believed he will stay beyond this summer.

This means missing out on Sommer – who would be a stellar first-choice ‘keeper and an even better back-up one for Man Utd – is not too much of a disaster.
