Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana has been criticised by Gabby Agbonlahor for picking on Harry Maguire as an “easy target” during their 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring for the Red Devils midway through the first half before the Bundesliga side hit back with two quick-fire strikes from Donyell Malen at the end of the half.

Brazilian winger Antony then put Man Utd level but a poor last half an hour from the Premier League side allowed Dortmund to sneak the game through a 71st-minute goal from Youssoufa Moukoko.

Onana, who joined Man Utd from Inter Milan for £47.5m earlier this month, made his feelings clear towards Maguire during the 90 minutes.

A loose pass from Maguire, which put one of his team-mates under pressure, was criticised by Onana with the former Ajax stopper making a save from the resulting Dortmund chance.

The Man Utd goalkeeper then jumped up and ran over to Maguire with the Cameroon international berating him for his apparent error.

But former Premier League striker Agbonlahor doesn’t think the England international did anything wrong and reckons Onana was just having a go at the former Man Utd captain because he’s an “easy target”.

“First of all Harry Maguire did nothing wrong,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. “He gave the ball to a midfielder, who gave it away, and I feel like he is an easy target.

“I don’t like that from Onana, I feel like he is an easy target. Are you doing that to [Lisandro] Martinez? I don’t think you’re, or even [Marcus] Rashord like that?’

Agbonlahor added: “Maguire is an easy target, so I did not like the look of that.

“I would understand if it was a big mistake, and cost a goal, or it was Harry Maguire’s fault, fair enough, but I want to see that same energy from every player.

“I understand he [Onana] is trying to create high standards, but when you watch games with him, he has given the ball away a lot and made mistakes.

“Imagine Harry Maguire doing that to him. I feel like you need to respect your teammates.”

When asked about the incident with Maguire, Onana told MUTV: “I try to talk to them a lot because I know he’s a good player, he is one of the captains of the the team.

“That’s big and he is good with the ball, so I would demand [from] him a lot and he’s a good, great guy. I have a good relationship with him. I have to be and he has to be ready and I spoke with him because when I’m in the goal, I demand to everyone a lot.

“I will start with myself because I think we are in this together and mistakes will come,” he added. “We don’t have to be afraid to make mistakes because this is part of life and we learn from the mistakes.

“So we have to be very critical with ourselves. And if we want to win prizes, we have to demand a lot. And for me, it’s a big honour to be here and I’m very happy to work with these guys, Harry is a top guy and a fantastic player. We will move on.”
